This last year a reboot of Ash’s origin story started making rounds in Japanese theaters. Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! is a brief reinterpretation of the first few days of Ash Ketchum’s adventure as a Pokémon trainer. In fact the first episode of Pokémon ever is titled, “Pokémon, I Choose You!” Using the framework of the same story, this modern adaptation tells a new version of the events that inspired a whole generation nearly two decades ago. Little changes make this a unique experience, including two new characters, Verity and Sorrel, that take the place of the beloved Misty and Brock. This film is a fast-paced love letter to the series filled with references to the unique world of Pokémon and nods to some of the older beloved characters. We see Butterfree, Charizard, and even new Pokémon that didn’t exist in Johto back when we first met Ash all those years ago. One of the highlights of this movie is the appearance of Ho-oh.
For those who don’t know, a legendary sparkling bird appeared in the original episode that for years was speculated to be Ho-oh. This movie just out-right shows an encounter between the rainbow phoenix and Ash!
Unfortunately Pokémon movies often are only seen direct-to-video outside of Asia. For those fans just dying to see the origins of Ash and his crew in the theater, this is your chance! This November 5th and 6th, the Pokémon International Company and Fathom events are teaming up to screen Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!
Running for only two days, these special events will be happening across the world and give fans the chance to experience one of the best Pokémon Movies on the big-screen with an adoring crowd. The times, theaters, and locations have yet to be announced but should be coming up in the next few weeks.
